Let's Talk Yarn

I understand that when you're busy, you don't always have the luxury of overthinking your yarn choices. If you have a local yarn store nearby, your schedule likely makes it difficult to visit in person, leading you to rely on a few trusted online brands and familiar yarns. While it is exciting to try something new, it can be a risk if you aren't sure you'll like the results.

I am here to help. My goal is to be your trusted advisor by sharing honest and thorough reviews so you can feel confident when trying a new yarn. You deserve to enjoy your projects from cast on to bind off, and beyond.

With each new pattern release, I will provide a corresponding review of the specified yarn to help you cast on with confidence.

Why You Should Choose a KJD Pattern

My vision is to create knitting and crochet patterns that fit seamlessly into your everyday life. When wearing a Kirsten Joel Designs pattern, you can feel confident and well-dressed for any occasion, knowing the instructions are clear and the fit is precise.

Why I Write Yarn Reviews

Managing a household, getting kids to school on time, and staying on top of work projects leave very little time for researching yarn reviews. My goal is to simplify that process for you.

While I stand by all the yarns I use, I know that every project has different needs. Below is a detailed look at Kelbourne Woolens Scout to help you decide if it is the right fit for your next project.

Kelbourne Woolens Scout

If you’ve been eyeing the gray-blue Lady Bird jacket sample and wondering whether that classic, toasty wool is actually as wonderful in real life as it looks in photos, I’ve got you. Today I’m diving deep into Kelbourne Woolens Scout — the 100% wool I used for the blue-gray version of Lady Bird.

The Details:

  1. Fiber: 100% Wool

  2. Weight: DK / Light Worsted

  3. Yardage: 230 yards (210 m) per 100 g skein

  4. Recommended Needle Size: US 5–7 (3.75–4.5 mm)

  5. Gauge: Approximately 5–6 sts per inch on US 5–7 needles

  6. Care: Hand wash, lay flat to dry

  7. Price: Around $14–17 per skein (depending on retailer)

  8. Colors: Beautiful heathered tones with a soft, classic depth (the Gray Heather used here is rich yet versatile)

First Impressions

The moment I opened the skein for the blue-gray Lady Bird sample, I smiled. Scout has that perfect “wool you want to live in” feel — substantial without being heavy, with a gentle bloom and soft texture that makes you want to keep petting it. The heathered Gray Heather color is rich and sophisticated, with tiny flecks that give it beautiful depth in person.

Winding was smooth and drama-free. The yarn has just enough grip to feel secure on the hook without splitting or fraying.

Swatching Experience

I swatched the Forked Cluster Stitch on US F5 / 3.75 mm, and the fabric was exactly what I hoped for in Lady Bird: structured yet soft, warm, and with a lovely drape. The stitches bloom beautifully after blocking, giving the jacket that polished, ready-to-wear look while still feeling cozy and breathable.

I also swatched a knitted lace stitch pattern to see how the yarn felt when knit rather than crocheted, and I love that it has nice stitch definition for the 1×1 ribbing but a slightly more brushed look in the lace stitch.

On the skin, it feels wonderfully comfortable — warm and toasty without being itchy (even for my somewhat sensitive skin). It’s denser and warmer than a typical DK alpaca, making it ideal for pieces you’ll wear on cooler days or layered over a tee.

Why I Chose it for the Blue-Gray Lady Bird

Scout was the perfect match for the blue-gray sample. The heathered color gives the jacket a quiet sophistication that works with both jeans and dresses. The yarn has enough structure to make the forked cluster stitches pop beautifully, while still feeling soft and huggable. The finished fabric holds its shape nicely but drapes elegantly — exactly the effortless, put-together look I wanted for Lady Bird.

Pros

  1. Beautiful heathered depth and classic wool look

  2. Warm and toasty without being heavy

  3. Excellent stitch definition in textured stitches like the forked cluster

  4. Soft hand with a gentle bloom after blocking

  5. Great value for a high-quality wool

Cons

  1. Not superwash (hand wash only)

  2. Can feel slightly denser than alpaca-based DKs

  3. The heathered colors show every stitch, so tension needs to stay consistent

If you love classic wool with beautiful depth and a cozy, wearable feel, Scout is for you. It’s especially wonderful for moms like us who want something that feels special yet practical for real-life layering.

Whether you’re making the blue-gray Lady Bird for that timeless, polished look or dreaming up your own cardigan or shawl, this yarn turns ordinary stitching time into something that feels comforting and elevated.

If you’re making Lady Bird in the blue-gray colorway, I can’t recommend Scout enough. It truly elevates the jacket into something that feels like a store-bought luxury piece — only better, because you made it.
