The Ultimate Yarn Review of Little Skein Harvest Sport

Note: This post was not sponsored or paid for. The yarn photographed was kindly gifted by Little Skein, but all thoughts + opinions are my own.

Let's Talk Yarn

I understand that when you're busy, you don't always have the luxury of overthinking your yarn choices. If you have a local yarn store nearby, your schedule likely makes it difficult to visit in person, leading you to rely on a few trusted online brands and familiar yarns. While it is exciting to try something new, it can be a risk if you aren't sure you'll like the results. Plus, your local yarn store might not carry yarn from special indie yarn dyers. And if they’re not, you’re missing out, but it can be scary to spend so much money on something you’ve never tried before!

I am here to help.

My goal is to be your trusted advisor by sharing honest and thorough reviews so you can feel confident when trying a new yarn. You deserve to enjoy your projects from cast on to bind off, and beyond.

With each new pattern release, I will provide a corresponding review of the specified yarn to help you cast on with confidence.

Why You Should Choose a KJD Pattern

My vision is to create knitting and crochet patterns that fit seamlessly into your everyday life. When wearing a Kirsten Joel Designs pattern, you can feel confident and well-dressed for any occasion, knowing the instructions are clear and the fit is precise.

Why I Write Yarn Reviews

Managing a household, getting kids to school on time, and staying on top of work projects leave very little time for researching yarn reviews. Or buying yarn and trying to return it if it’s not right for you or your project.

My goal is to simplify that process for you.

While I stand by all the yarns I use, I know that every project (and every maker) has different needs. Below is a detailed look at Little Skein Harvest Sport to help you decide if it is the right fit for your next project.

the ultimate yarn review of Little Skein Harvest Sport

If you’ve been eyeing the Tidal Creek Pullover and wondering whether this beautiful US-grown sport-weight wool is as wonderful in real life as it looks in photos, I’ve got you. Today I’m diving deep into Little Skein Harvest Sport — the 100% American wool I used for one of the Tidal Creek samples.

The Details:

  • Fiber: 100% US-grown Merino-Rambouillet wool

  • Weight: Sport

  • Yardage: 312 yards (285 m) per 100 g skein

  • Recommended Needle Size: US 4–6 (3.5–4 mm)

  • Gauge: Approximately 23–25 sts per 4 inches on US 4–6 needles

  • Care: Hand wash, lay flat to dry

  • Price: Around $36

  • Colors: Gorgeous, rich heathered and semi-solid tones that feel both modern and timeless

First Impressions

The moment I opened the skein, I could feel the quality. Harvest Sport is plump, bouncy, and has that lovely “wool you want to live in” feel. It’s substantial yet light, with a soft hand and beautiful stitch definition that makes textured stitches sing.

Winding was smooth and drama-free — no splitting or fuss, and the yarn moved easily through my fingers, around the yarn swift, and onto the ball winder. After winding the skein, I had a relatively large cake.

Swatching Experience

I swatched on US 3 needles and the lace fabric was exactly what I wanted for Tidal Creek: warm, structured, and with a gentle drape that still holds its shape. The wool blooms gently after blocking, giving the pullover a polished, ready-to-wear look while staying breathable.

On the skin, it feels wonderfully comfortable — soft enough for next-to-skin wear without any itch (even for my sensitive skin).

Why I Chose it for the Tidal Creek Pullover

Harvest Sport was the perfect match for Tidal Creek. The wool has just enough structure to make the lace and texture pop, while still feeling soft and wearable for everyday life. The heathered tones give the pullover that quiet, coastal sophistication I love.

I chose the Blue Christmas colorway for my first sample of Tidal Creek, because it reminded me of the marsh grass in the Tidal Creeks of Charleston that inspired the pullover. But it would also look stunning in other colorways like Rail or Toad Hall. If you’re looking for a more neutral option, you can’t go wrong with Moonlight.

About Little Skein and the Woman Behind the Business

Little Skein is a small, woman-owned business based in San Francisco, run by Anne Vally. Anne hand-dyes every skein in her studio and is deeply committed to creating yarn that feels good to make with and to wear. Her business values center on fairness, kindness, and doing good in the world (all of which are at the core of the KJD business as well) — she pays everyone who contributes to Little Skein a living wage (and aims to exceed it), supports slow making, and creates a welcoming space for liberal knitters and crocheters who want to slow down and make something beautiful.

My partnership with Little Skein for the Tidal Creek Pullover feels especially meaningful. Choosing a small, values-driven, woman-owned indie dyer aligns perfectly with my own goal of supporting makers who care as much about the process and the people as they do about the finished object.

Pros

  1. Beautiful heathered depth and rich color

  2. Plump, bouncy hand with excellent stitch definition

  3. Warm yet breathable — perfect for transitional weather

  4. Fully US-grown, spun, and dyed

  5. Feels special without being fussy to work with

Cons

  1. Not superwash (hand wash only)

  2. Higher price point than everyday wool (but you’re paying for quality, ethics, and one-of-a-kind gorgeous colors)

If you love wool that feels comforting and looks elevated, Harvest Sport is for you. It’s especially wonderful for busy makers like you who want something that feels special every time you pick it up.

Whether you’re making the Tidal Creek Pullover or dreaming up your own cozy sweater or shawl, this yarn turns ordinary stitching time into something that feels nurturing and intentional.

Tidal Creek | Pullover

Tidal Creek was inspired by the many salt marshes sprinkled throughout Charleston, South Carolina. There is a magic that happens where the pluff mud creates tall, strong, vibrant green grasses that reach confidently into the bright blue sky.

A tidal creek is a part of the marsh that slowly winds its way to the vast ocean. These creeks are full of life - white egrets, crabs, dolphins, and even alligators.

This pullover is my homage to these beautiful marshes and the grass that borders the creek pathway. It starts with a simple eyelet lace stitch pattern at the hem that evokes the tall marsh grass and transitions to a more delicate lace pattern that represents how the grass eases into the sky and the clouds floating above.

Tidal Creek features an easy shape, wide casual boatneck and drop shoulders to create the perfect three-season pullover in your favorite sport weight yarn. You’ll find yourself reaching for the pullover on bright spring mornings and crisp winter afternoons, each time feeling transported to this magical marsh.

The body of Tidal Creek is worked flat in pieces from the bottom up and seamed. Armhole shaping is worked to keep the drop shoulder seam location consistent across the size range. The drop shoulders are shaped with a sloped bind off, and instructions are provided for an optional cup shaping with short rows.

Once the body pieces are completed and seamed, stitches are picked up around the armhole and worked from the bicep to the cuff in the round with a few short rows to create a gentle cap for an optimal fit and easy movement in the underarm.

Stitches are picked up around the neckline to work an i-cord bind-off for a simple yet elegant neckline trim.

The two samples are knit with Little Skein Harvest Sport in Blue Christmas (blue-green) and Camellia Fiber Co Merino Sport in Camellia (pink).

Harvest Sport is a 100% non-superwash Merino-Rambouillet wool that’s perfect for wearing against the skin all year round. Harvest Sport wool is fully grown and spun in the US, next-to-skin soft thanks to its 21-micron count, and the 3-ply construction is bouncy, elastic, and squishy. The tight twist makes for a long-lasting piece that resists pilling longer than traditional merino wool yarns.

CFC Merino Sport is 100% Merino wool yarn that delivers blissful warmth without overheating. It is beautifully spun, with a firm twist and round shape, making it ideal for rendering crisp stitch definition and lace knitting. The yarn also has an extraordinary amount of spring and bounce, which makes for an incredible "smoosh factor" in the finished project.

Tidal Creek will be an essential and versatile pullover in your closet. Please share your progress on Instagram by tagging me @kirstenjoel_designs and using the hashtags #tidalcreekkjd. I love to see all of your works in progress and finished projects!
