Cup Shaping
Lady Bird includes instructions for optional cup shaping using short rows. These short rows add additional length of fabric to the front chest to accommodate breasts.
To choose a cup size, measure the length from the top of your shoulder to under your breast for your front, then measure from the top of your shoulder to the same horizontal level on your back. A helpful measuring point is where your bra band rests.
Subtract the back length from the front length and subtract an additional 2” / 5 cm. Choose a cup size based on your result.
If your result is:
Less than 1.25” / 3 cm; omit the short rows
1.25 - 2.25” / 3 - 6 cm; work Cup 1 - adds 1.25” / 3 cm
2.25 - 3.5” / 6 - 8.5 cm; work Cup 2 - adds 2.25” / 6 cm
3.5 - 4.5” / 8.5 - 11 cm; work Cup 3 - adds 3.5 / 8.5 cm
More than 4.5“ / 11 cm; work Cup 4 - adds 4.5” / 11 cm
Yarn
Substitution notes: Look for a dk-weight alpaca or wool yarn that will create a dense fabric. If choosing an alpaca yarn, look for one that is dense to prevent the piece from growing in length. Substituting Herriot can be challenging, so it may be easier to swap it for a wool yarn if you’re looking for alternative options.
Beige Sample: Juniper Moon Herriot - DK weight; 100% Baby alpaca; 219 yards / 100 g; photographed in Linen.
Grey Sample: Kelbourne Woolens Scout - DK weight; 100% wool; 274 yards / 100g; photographed in 058 Grey Heather.
Yardage
Note: A 10% buffer has been added to all yardage estimates and rounded to the nearest whole skein. The estimates below include yardage for a 5 x 5” swatch. For accuracy, you can add the yardage requirements for your selected options together and divide by the yards/skein of your chosen yarn.
