Avalanche is the kind of project that gives you two completely different knitting experiences in one cozy cowl. One half is worked in a deeply textured stitch pattern with an easy, rhythmic feel, while the other transitions into an open trellis lace that gives you just enough to pay attention to without turning the project into something you have to concentrate on every second.

The result is a generously sized cowl with two distinct fabrics that play against each other when it is wrapped around your neck. The texture gives the fabric warmth and substance, while the lace keeps the finished piece from feeling too heavy. At 14" wide and approximately 66" around, there is plenty of fabric to wrap, drape, and tuck into a coat on colder days.

Avalanche is worked flat from one end to the other, beginning with the textured section before changing needle sizes and transitioning into the Trellis Lace stitch. Once both halves are complete, the cast-on and bind-off edges are seamed together to create the circular cowl. That simple construction also makes this an easy project to keep beside the couch, take with you, or return to whenever you find a little knitting time.

The sample is knit in Blue Sky Fibers Extra, an aran-weight blend of alpaca and merino wool. The lofty yarn gives the textured stitches beautiful definition while still allowing the lace section to open after blocking.
